Some of the original features that still exist inside the Jerome Grand Hotel include the 1926 Otis Elevator, which, according to the hotel’s website, is claimed to be the “oldest original self-service elevator in Arizona and possibly the United States.”

It is a slow, somewhat creepy ride to the top of the building, and I dare you to take a ride and not think about what happened to Claude Harvey while you are waiting for your floor.

We scheduled a ghost tour and hunt package for the night of our stay, but when we arrived, we were told it was cancelled because we were the only ones booked into the hotel for the evening! I could not believe my good fortune, and it was getting even better when hotel employee Tom Lennox told us he could accommodate us on a private tour.

The hotel shared some helpful resource tools with us, including a list of people who died in the building and a map outlining what they believe all the former rooms to be. The conservative estimate of deaths inside the building is placed at around nine hundred.

Reflecting upon what you have now read about the miners, silicosis, and tuberculosis, does it come as any surprise to you that one of the most highly reported phenomena experienced by guests inside the Jerome Grand Hotel are the phantom sounds of coughing and labored breathing?

The first stop was to go to the boiler room from the lobby (the old ER entrance). We were then shown the death sites of Claude Harvey and Manoah Hoffpauir (“Hoff”).

Mr. Harvey was found facedown underneath the elevator in 1935. His death was ruled an accident, but there is much speculation as to the truth of this.

Tom said that many people in town were waiting for him to retire so they could put in to take over his job.
